These are some notes that I prepared on a portion of Psalms 139.  The original text was written in the Hebrew language.  Therefore, I basically did a word-study on some of the passage.  I used it to show how God is against ABORTION!  Just the fact that your father's sperm met your mother's egg shows that God gave you a divine nod of approval to be in the earth.  Likewise, every 'conception' acknowledges God's reception.  In the study of the Psalm I didn't place a lot of personal notes or thoughts so it is not "preachy."  What you have here is pretty much a beautiful, simple word-study / exegesis of scripture.

I'd love to have your comments.  E-mail me at pt@putback.org

Psalms 139
Some studious thoughts by Pastor Tim Hodge

Ps 139:1, “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me” (KJV)

“searched” St. 02713 – chaqar – penetrate, to examine intimately, always connotes diligent, difficult probing.  NOTE: like being frisked.

“known” – St. 3045 – ‘yadha’ --  according to Zhodiates this word means, “to know by the senses.”  Used several times in Psalms 139:1,2,4,14,23.

bulletHear: God knows your voice.
bulletSight: God knows what you look like.
bulletTouch: God knows what you feel like.
bulletSmell: God knows what you smell like.
bulletTaste: God knows what you taste like.
bulletAnd, of course, yes, God does have ESP.

Ps 139:2, “Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off” (KJV).

“knowest” – cf. v.1 – God has experienced your getting down and up by His sensory perception.  What has He experienced?

“understandest” – St. 995 – Biyn (bene).  Zhodiates: “The word does not refer to the mere accumulation of data, but superior knowledge.”

It is possible to hear and not perceive; note the words of Jesus: “Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand” (Matthew 13:13, KJV).

“thought” – St.  7454 – rea (ray-ah) – thought.  Rt. – St. 7462 – to tend to a flock, to graze, generally to rule.  Literally from the root: “He knows the thoughts that rule your heart.”

Proverbs 23:7a, “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” (KJV).

“afar off” – denotes place and time.

Ps 139:3, “Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways” (KJV).

“compasseth” – St. 2219 – zarah – to toss about, to scatter, fan, winnow (to blow off chaff).

“path” – St. 734 – orach – “Well-trodden path.”

“lying down” – the bedroom.

“ways” – St. 1870 – Derek – course of life, mode of action.

Ps 139:4, “For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether” (KJV).

“knowest” – cf. earlier words of “know”

Ps 139:5, “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me” (KJV).

“beset” – St. 6696 – ‘tsuwr’ (tsoor) – to cramp, confine, shut up, to secure a valuable object.

“hand” – palm, hollow of the hand.

Ps 139:6, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it” (KJV)

“knowledge” – St. 1847 – comes from rt 3045 – ‘know’ as already discussed – Knowledge, insight, intelligence, understanding, cunning, gained from the senses.

“wonderful” – St. 6383 – ‘pily’ (pi-lee) – remarkable.  From the rt. 6381 – ‘pala’ – “separate or distinguishable; supernatural”.  Isaiah 9:6, “And His name shall be called ‘WONDERFUL’, ‘COUNSELOR’….”

Rom 11:33, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unfathomable (inscrutable, unsearchable) are His judgments (His decisions)! And how untraceable (mysterious, undiscoverable) are His ways (His methods, His paths)” (AMP)!

Ps 139:13, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb” (KJV).

“Possessed”  - St. 7069 – “to acquire, purchase, erect”.  This has to do with commercial, financial acquisition.

“Reins” – St. 3629 – lit. kidneys, fig. “seat of the mind.”  Hebrew thought had it that the “reins” were the first part formed of the human fetus.

“Covered” – St. 5526 – ‘cakak’ – “fenced in”.

NOTE: God determined us/our emotions in our mother’s womb.  How many have been surgically altered by circumstances, betrayal, pain, and hurt?

Alter your situation at the altar of God!

Ps. 139:14, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (KJV).

“Praise” – yadah

“Fearfully” – St. 3372 – ‘yare’ – “to fear, morally to revere, to be in awe.”

“Wonderfully” – St. 6395 – ‘palah’ (paw-law) – “distinguish, marked out, separated to be wonderful.”

“Marvelous” – St. 6381 – pala – cf. v.6 – “separate, distinguishing, and supernatural”.

“works” – NOTE: corporate, plural.

“Knoweth” – St. 3045 – previous verses – YADHA.

“Right well” – St. 3966 –  me’od (meh-ode) – “vehemence.  Always implies exceeding”

Some Scriptures where this Hebrew word is used:

·
Genesis 1:31 – “very good”.
·
2 Kings 23:25 – King Josiah turned to the Lord with ALL his heart.
·
Genesis 13:2 – Abraham’s wealth.
·
Genesis 13:13, 18:20 – the men of Sodom and Gomorrah were EXCEEDING sinful.
·
Genesis 15:1 – the Lord is our shield and EXCEEDING great reward.

NOTE: Therefore, we must be emphatically SURE of WHO we are in Christ and WHO He is in us!

“THE FAITH OF GOD.”

  Mark 11:13-14

“And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. (v14)  And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it” (KJV).

Mark 11:20-24

“And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. (v21) And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. (v22) And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. (v23) For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. (v24) Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (KJV).

God has such creativity in Himself that He takes time to AWE Himself in our formation and design (Psalms 139:14).

“God is about to do something in the earth so incredibly awesome that He is the ONLY ONE Who can believe for it.” Dr. Kelley Varner in Chosen For Greatness, p. 27

Ps. 139:15, “My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth” (KJV).

“Substance” – St. 6108 – ‘otsem’ – “power; hence the ‘body’ implies ‘bone.’” NOTE: DNA STRUCTURE!?!

“Made” – St. 6213 – asaw – “used with the sense of ethical obligation.”  Zhodiates: “in the account of the creation bara (1254) and asah alternate.  Bara conveys the thought of creation ‘ex nihilo’ (out of nothing), while ‘asah’ is broader in scope and dealt with ‘REFINEMENT.’

NOTE: GOD is committed to me because I am the creation He is obligated to.”

“Secret” – St. 5643 – cether – a cover.

“Curiously” – St. 7551 – raqam – embroider, fabricate, mix colors.

Psalms 139:16, “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them” (KJV)

“My substance, yet being unperfect” – St. 1564 – golem – an unwrapped and unformed mass: Hebrew – embryo.

“Thy book” – St. 5612 – cepher – writing, book.  Root: 5608 – caphar – implies a ‘recounting.’

Recounting?  Isa 46:10, “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (KJV).

Eph 1:4, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love” (KJV).

THE BOOK: Malachi 3:16; Job 14:5; Psalms 56:8; Matt. 12:35-37; Revelation 20:12

“Written” – St. 3789 – ‘kathab’ – to write or engrave.

“Continuance” – St. 3117 – yowm (yome) – “TIME”; 273 days in gestation.

“Fashioned” – St. 3335 – yatsar – to mode into form; especially as a POTTER.

“None of them” – is this referring to my ‘members’ or my ‘days.’
